السلام عليكم

Al-Kawthar e.V.

An Islamic community in Karlsruhe

Since 2013, families from Karlsruhe and the surrounding area have gathered here for prayer, for lectures and for the major occasions of the Shia year. If you have a question or would like to visit, please do get in touch.

Welcome

Who we are

We are a non-profit association in Karlsruhe, active since 2013. We follow the Shia tradition and understand ourselves as an open place for anyone who is interested in Islam or looking for a sense of community.

The name comes from the Qur'an (Sura 108) and means something close to “abundance” or “plenty”. For us it stands for what we share here: prayer, teaching, iftars together in Ramadan, the great majālis of Muharram, weddings, births and funerals.

Whether you come regularly to pray, listen to a lecture, or simply want to see how we live: you are welcome here, whatever your background or denomination.

What we do

Our activities

What happens here each week runs from the quiet evening prayer to the Saturday youth meeting. A selection:

Prayer & holy days

The prayer hall is open every Friday for congregational prayer, and every Thursday we meet for supplication. Alongside these come the feasts and commemorations of the Islamic calendar — above all Ramadan, Ashura, and the birth and death anniversaries of the Ahl al-Bayt.

Lectures & learning

Evening lectures on the Qur'an, hadith and the lives of the Ahl al-Bayt, along with open discussion circles on everyday life, faith and society — usually with tea afterwards.

Youth work

Weekend programmes, outings and regular group sessions for children, teenagers and young adults. The youth group organises most of what it does itself.

Arabic, Qur'an & tutoring

Arabic lessons from primary-school age, Qur'an recitation for beginners and advanced learners, and school tutoring given by older siblings and university students.

Social support

Company on trips to government offices, help with translation, support through illness and bereavement. We do what is within our means, and refer you onward where it is not.

Community life

Sports evenings, cooking together, film nights, youth celebrations. Spaces where the generations meet and community life carries on outside the prayer hall too.

Frequently asked

What you might want to know

Answers to the questions we are asked most. Something important missing? Just write to us.

Can I come by even if I am not a Muslim?

Yes, at any time. We are especially glad to have guests at lectures, celebrations and the Muharram evenings. A short message beforehand is enough — we will meet you at the entrance and explain how the evening runs.

What should I wear?

Modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. We ask women to bring a headscarf; there are also scarves to borrow at the entrance. Shoes are taken off before entering the prayer hall.

How can I become a member?

You do not need formal membership to take part in anything we do. If you would like to support the association actively and have a say at the annual general meeting, you fill in a membership form. It is available in the entrance area, or by email on request.

I am new to Islam, or still learning. Can you help?

Gladly. We make time for one-to-one conversations, provide learning material in German and Arabic, and go through the basics of prayer with you step by step. Just come by, or write to us first.

Is anything offered in German?

Yes. The Friday khutba and the evening lectures are mostly in Arabic, but we summarise the main points in German. The youth group and parts of our events increasingly run in German.

Can I fast here, or break my fast with you?

During Ramadan we open every Saturday for iftar. Over the last ten nights (Laylat al-Qadr) there is a programme of its own, with lectures and duʿāʾ running late into the night.
